Available in 100 mL and 250 mL multidose vials.
Mechanism of Action
Tylosin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic effective against Gram-positive bacteria, including Staphylococci, Streptococci, Corynebacteria spp., and Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae, as well as some Gram-negative bacteria like Campylobacter coli and certain spirochetes. Tylosin is also effective against Mycoplasma species in birds and mammals, including cattle, sheep, goats, and pigs. Thanks to its lipid solubility, weakly basic nature, and ability to accumulate in inflamed tissues, tylosin effectively targets mastitis, metritis, pneumonia, and footrot (necrotic pododermatitis).
Indications
- Cattle: Treats and controls acute mastitis, metritis due to Trueperella pyogenes, respiratory infections from Pasteurella multocida, footrot, and calf diphtheria.
- Pigs: Effective for ileitis associated with Lawsonia intracellularis, swine erysipelas, pneumonia caused by Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae and M. hyorhinis, and arthritis from Mycoplasma hyosynoviae and M. hyorhinis.
- Sheep and Goats: Treats early-stage peracute and acute contagious agalactia due to Mycoplasma agalactiae and caprine pleuropneumonia caused by Mycoplasma mycoides var capri.
Dosage and Administration
Administer intramuscularly in cattle, pigs, sheep, and goats, or by slow intravenous injection in cattle only. Rapid IV injection may cause adverse reactions such as ataxia, dyspnea, and increased salivation. Alternate the injection site with repeated doses, especially for injections over 15 mL.
- Cattle (including calves): 5–10 mg/kg (2.5–5 mL/100 kg) LW daily, up to 5 days.
- Pigs: 5–10 mg/kg (0.25–0.5 mL/10 kg) LW daily, up to 3 days.
- Sheep and Goats: 10 mg/kg (0.5 mL/10 kg) LW daily, up to 5 days.
Withholding Periods
- Meat: Animals must not be slaughtered for human consumption during treatment or within 21 days following the last dose.
- Milk: Milk must be discarded during treatment and for 72 hours post-treatment.
Special Precautions
Tylosin, a critical macrolide antibiotic, should not be used indiscriminately to prevent resistance. Reserve for cases where other antibiotics are ineffective, with guidance from culture and sensitivity tests. Limit treatment to the minimum duration necessary, and monitor for clinical improvement.
