 what is Calject?

  • Calject 50 Injectable Solution is a veterinary injectable electrolyte formulated to correct hypocalcemia (e.g., milk fever in cattle and buffaloes). It’s typically supplied in a 450 ml single-dose vial for intravenous or subcutaneous use.

 Composition (per 450 ml vial) | Calject 50 Injectable Solution

  • Calcium Gluconate (equivalent to ~2.23 % w/v Ca++)

  • Boric Acid in a ~2.26:1 ratio to calcium

  • Chlorocresol 0.1 % w/v (preservative)

  • Water for injection

  • Approximate Ca++ concentration: 1112.8 mEq/L

  Indications

Used to treat or prevent calcium-deficiency conditions in cattle and buffaloes, including:

  • Milk fever (periparturient hypocalcemia)

  • Support in other metabolic disorders like tetany, edema, postpartum paresis, and as an electrolyte replenisher post-calving

  Dosage & Administration

General dosing guidelines (refer to label or vet instructions):

  • Route: Slowly IV (preferred), SC, or IM

  • Minimum dose: ~0.5 ml/kg body weight

  • Typical maximum:

    • Cattle: up to 250–300 ml

    • Buffaloes: similar range

  • Can repeat dose after 24 hrs if needed

  • Warm solution to body temperature before IV administration

  • IV injection must be slow to avoid cardiac side effects

  Contraindications & Precautions
  • Use cautiously in animals with:

    • Renal insufficiency or cardiovascular disease

    • Hypercalcemia (danger of elevated calcium levels)

  • To reduce discomfort and ensure proper absorption:

    • Warm before administration

    • Inject SC/IM in divided doses

  • Monitor IV administration for cardiac irregularities – slow injection is critical
